Dr. Lakynn Hodgens, DMD, an alumna of the Washington County High School Class of 2017, has become a dentist. After high school, Hodgens attended the University of Louisville, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Pan African Studies in 2021. She then went on to attend dental school at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, earning a Doctor of Dental Medicine earlier this year. “I chose to become a dentist because I’ve always been drawn to a career where I can help people in a meaningful, hands-on way,” says Hodgens. “One of the best parts of being a dentist is building relationships with my patients and helping them feel empowered in their health. I love being able to help someone feel healthier and more confident – sometimes with just one appointment.”
Hodgens has begun her career as a dentist at Mortenson Family Dental at the Hikes Point location in Louisville. Currently, she provides comprehensive dentistry services including root canal treatments, extractions and crowns. “Although I am early in my career, I’m proud of the foundation I’ve built so far,” she said. “I’ve been able to care for a wide variety of patients, grow my clinical skills every day, and start building trusting relationships with the people in my community. I look forward to continuing to grow my clinical skills and expanding services I can offer, particularly in areas like cosmetic dentistry and advanced oral surgery. Over time, I hope to become a trusted provider in my community and eventually, have the opportunity to mentor students who want to begin a career in dentistry."
Looking back, Hodgens says former WCHS Family and Consumer Science teacher Sarah Raikes and current WCHS FCS teacher Traci Blanford were influential in her life as a high school student. “They were my FCS teachers/FCCLA advisors and helped me grow as a leader, learn responsibility and step outside my comfort zone.”
Dr. Hodgens enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling and caring for her two cats, one dog and a growing collection of plants.
